Starving Artist Cafe

Country Epiphany!! - 8 p.m.

249 City Island Avenue
Bronx New York 10464
US [map]
Price: No cover, music donation expecte

Can't guarantee an epiphany, but twang and a frisson are on order...lovely music-focused cafe in picturesque City Island, a small piece of New England in the Bronx (19th century fishing port). Two sets, with special guest ace country vocalist Sandy Dunn.

Coffee, desserts, and cafe fare, such as panini...or have a pre-show dinner nearby at one of the Island's several well-known restaurants.

Public transportation:

If going by subway and bus:
There are two #6 trains, one going to Parkchester, and the other to Pelham Bay Park. Take the #6 going to Pelham Bay Park. Just outside Pelham Bay Park train station, there is a bus stop for buses that go to Co Op City and City Island. Take the bus BX29 that goes to City Island. Buses run every 15 minutes or so before 7 pm.
It takes about 50 minutes to get from Grand Central Station to Pelham Bay Park, and another 10 minutes on the BX29 to the Starving Artist Cafe. Allow at least 1.5 hours travel time to make it in time for the show. .
If going by car, your friends can enter their starting point and the driving directions will appear, just like mapquest via the starving artist link.

Playing solo (watch here for special guests) in my new 'hood. A very cool space for aesthetes of all ages...if you've seen Midnight in Paris recently, it might remind you of the '20's...very Old School and fun space, with a continous showing of interesting local painters and photographers...the Smoked Ham & Brie on Baguette is a good value...

Rochester Civic Theater

Americana Showcase - 7:30 p.m.

20 Civic Center Drive SE
Rochester Minnesota 55904
US 507-282-8481 [map]
Price: $17.50 advance, $22.00 at door

A terrific lineup, preceding alt.country/roots rock band Six-Mile Grove as they preview their new CD, and following dynamic Americana duo Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank. A lovely medium sized concert hall with great sound and line of sight. CD's on sale at intermission.

Call for directions.

Wow, what a wonderful show. First, it was a sell-out...all 303 seats filled. The audience was great...I had the tough job of opening, coz I was the solo person, followed by a duo and the headliners, a full five-piece band. The new songs and the new arrangements were heavily applauded, all my new jokes worked (!), and there was high degree of interaction...call it sympathetic heckling...we...all 304 of us...had a helluva good time. Folks in Minnesota are great to play for...both warm and hip...if you do your job they really respond. My musical confreres, the Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, and Six-Mile Grove, gave terrific performances...one after another, we rocked the house. Can't wait to go back...in fact, I immediately started having business meetings with venues in the area with the intention of returning to gig in May 2012. Watch for Six-Mile Grove's forthcoming release...the songs as previewed were very strong.

Great little room, all about the music, insiders' choice for roots music in the Lower East Side; "L" train to 2nd Ave & Houston, use 1st Ave exit

Great evening...full house, encore, tips were good, and I hit a few high notes (artistically I mean, not pitch-wise). First time with Paul Winsor (bass) and Ray Samuels (harmonica)--they did great. Good turnout of Jimmie Dale Gilmore songwriting seminar friends, United Nations friends, Ray's crew, and we saved some new souls! Big surprise: the act before was early jazz & blues piano man David Keys, but with him was my neighbor and blues guitar luminary Woody Mann--nice coincidence, for sure (Woody played the brilliant part on "Dallas", on my CD). Act following was VOCO--check them out, something special, in my view...
